Apple
turns on TV, again
Apple has unveiled the new Apple TV which offers
users the ability to rent content from a large online
selection of HD movies, including first run movies
for $4.99, and an array of HD TV show episodes from
ABC, Fox, Disney Channel and BBC America from 99
cents. All content will be commercial free.
Apple TV also streams content from Netflix, YouTube,
Flickr and MobileMe, as well as music, photos and
videos from PCs and Macs to HDTVs. Steve Jobs, Apples
CEO said "This tiny, silent box costing just
$99 lets users watch thousands of HD movies and

Sky
confirms 50 HD channels, 3m+ HD subs
Living HD has launched on Sky, meaning that Sky
has now confirmed all 50 HD channels that will be
available by Christmas. Good Food HD launched earlier
this week, and HD channels including Eden HD, ITV
2 HD, ITV 3 HD and ITV 4 HD will follow Living HD,
which becomes the 46th HD channel on the Sky platform.
Sky has also revealed it has now attracted more
than three million HD subscribers, so over 30 per
cent of customers chose to pay for the viewing experience......................................more

Discovery hostage taking over
A man who had taken three employees hostage at Discoverys
HQ was shot dead by police yesterday. Multiple news outlets
have identified the man as James Jay Lee. He is well-known
to local authorities as a radical environmentalist who
has allegedly organised multiple protests outside Discovery
headquarters for what he believes is the network's dearth
of programming about environmental dangers including global

Virgin
vows honest broadband speed claims
Virgin Media has promised to publish its typical broadband
speeds each month, as it publishes a survey suggesting
that most customers find internet service providers' advertisements
misleading.
Only 9 per cent of respondents surveyed by ICM for Virgin
Media think broadband advertising tends to be accurate,
and 93 per cent of people believe ISPs should only advertise
the typical speed received by the majority of customers.................................................more
SES
Astra takes 3D initiative
SES Astra has announced a new initiative to support the
introduction of 3D television in Europe. As part of the
initiative, the industry reached a common understanding
of the minimum technical specifications for the introduction
of 3D television and broadcasting. The initiative is backed
by SES Astra and major European broadcasters including
public and private TV channels as well as representatives
from the consumer electronics industry.
Initial satellite 3D transmissions will use either the
side-by-side (for 1080i resolution) or top-bottom (for
720p resolution) formats which make them compatible with
existing HD set top boxes...................................................more
