Police coordinate Euro pirate raids

Police have conducted a series of raids across Europe in the biggest crackdown yet on file-sharing. Forty-eight sites were targeted in countries including the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Hungary.
In Sweden, seven premises were raided including PRQ, which is believed to host Pirate Bay and the revelatory website WikiLeaks. Co-ordinated by Belgian police, the operation was the culmination of a two-year investigation............more



Digital Plus subscriber slide

Sogecable-owned Digital Plus, continues losing subscribers with a drop of 24,523 in only two months ending August 2010. It now has 1,760,320 subscribers with an ARPU of E41.7. The company, which reported an EBITDA of E189 million, claims to have reduced its churn rate "for the fifth consecutive month."
Over the last months, Digital Plus has been reaching agreements with Jazztel, Telecable and Orange to distribute its content through different platforms in an attempt to find new revenue sources................more




French back-off pay-TV VAT

The French government has dropped its proposal to raise the rate of VAT on pay-TV operator Canal Plus from 5.5 per cent to 19.6 per cent.
President Nicolas Sarkozy dropped the plan, which could have forced Canal Plus to raise its subscription charges significantly, after lobbying from the French cinema industry which fears a loss of vital revenue if C+ loses subscribers...........................................more


iPhone will control Google TV

Among further details confirmed about Google TV is the news that it will be integrating mobile phone control for forthcoming, and not just using Android phones.
Britney Bohnet, product marketing manager for Google said: "You'll be able to use your Android phone or iPhone as remote control and will be able to control [Google TV] using just your voice.........................................more

Israel’s SpaceCom faces orbital slot problem

Israel’s satellite operator Spacecom has rights to an important DTH broadcasting orbital slot over Europe and Africa at 17 degrees East. However, a major problem with a temporary satellite placed into the position could mean the loss of the position.
The problem started when Spacecom bought a second-hand satellite from AsiaSat (AsiaSat-2) last year as a temporary ‘gap-filler’, for $45 million, and moved it to the 17 deg East slot. On August 9th Spacecom told the Tel Aviv stock exchange that there was a problem with AsiaSat-2 and that it had far less fuel on board than was originally thought. AsiaSat-2 had operated for some 13 years since launch..............................................more
